Artist Statement

Like many other artists my works are also inspired from nature, society, environment and the need of contemporary art. I am more inspired from literature and drama rather than fine art I have a long list of artists, artisans, writers, movies, ideas and concepts that provide an alternate way of understanding life around me.

As an artist migrating from Odisha to Delhi, I have always been interested in cityscapes and urbanization as a subject matter. It has instigated me to see the city in detail- its architecture, view, history, design, culture, and in a day to day life in a city. A big city or metropolis usually has associated suburbs and exurbs. I am more interested with the Cities’ complex systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation.

My practice could be seen as a painting, as an installation, sculptural frieze and this contributes to as well as elaborates my complex vision of simple images. I explore a diversity of details in realistic manmade objects. The subject is in abstract and stylized form to decorate the surfaces of three dimension arts and crafts, metal work, paper making, water color and found objects. In these works that dealt with objects and landscape in city, I often included small detailed drawings. From being just one of many elements within a landscape, over time, the structure of the building becomes more isolated. It moved from drawing to painting to paper cutting layer to layer and tray to a three dimensional from.

I like to explore ideas of cohabitation, of how different people come together from different places and backgrounds to build their own personal Utopias sharing a common space. I am curious to study different culture, languages and humanity activity, sharing their experiences.

As an Artist, I am currently exploring the unique ways to express the beauty and spiritual essence of plant forms by creating the illusion of atmosphere and mood. The consequent adaptation is seminal to my practice both in a vein of personal as well as a collective history.
