Artist Statement

My experience of working in a small dhaba (restaurant) gave me an opportunity to closely examine the behavior and sociology of a section of migrated community of poor laborers. For me it was an urgency to support my course of study, but I left the place at a critical juncture when my study at the Art College called for more involvement.

Exploring the common place through sculptural processes and material has intervened into domains I have been a part of. Objects ranging from spaces like the kitchen, washroom, market, private room architectural spaces etc are like disparate data, irreconcilable in nature, yet put together, forming an irrational juxtaposition. The whole idea lies in the act of experiencing a shift of the considered objects from their ordinary context to the sculptural/artistic periphery.  The search is to look into the sculptural, formal, aesthetic possibilities of objects, thereby making attempts to bring about an iconic, sculptural presence in them. Technique plays an important role in my practice because I try to be honest toward the form I am dealing with. Over familiar forms in The Lost Lane are curved out from wood in the realistic format to the best of my ability. This is to portray them in their recognizable form and also to provide them with a status of sculpture with subtle formal innovations.
