Birendra Pani

artist bio

Birendra Pani completed his BFA from Kala Bhavan, Viswabharati University, Shantiniketan (1997) and MFA from University Baroda (1999). Pani's works are characterised by the use of loud and vivid colours, and his nudes, far removed from traditional ideas, rather than revealing of clandestine activities and provoking corporeal or sensual excitement in the viewer, portray very private and personal instances in the subjects' lives. The fine-line, figurative drawing elements which are such a strong feature of Pani's multi-dimensional practice resonate with Odishi pictorial traditions, namely its Pattachitra, a popular, miniature style of painting generally associated with the famous Jagannath Temple in the Odishi town of Puri. Pani's major solo shows include "Mahanadi" (2016) curated by Maurice O' Riordan at Lalit Kala Akademy, Delhi; "Soft- Subversion" (2012) at Red Earth Art Gallery, Baroda; and "Re - Vision" (2009) at Gallery Espace New Delhi and R.L.Fine arts, New York.
