Artist Statement

‘Planetary Planning’

‘As a child I recall primary school history lessons where images of these explorers where hung on the blackboard, celebrating the birth of the modern world, they left an indelible impression, their almost God like status’ states Desmond Lazaro.

Inspired by Fuller’s non-hierarchical approach to geography, in which there is no up or down, no north or south, Desmond Lazaro’s works, made especially for the exhibition, include Dymaxion maps and their three-dimensional rendering in the form of an icosahedron mobile. Fuller’s Dymaxion map, constituted of eight triangles and six squares, was published in 1943 as a DIY kit in Life magazine. This mental construction is based on an alternative comprehension of the world, which abandons the Mercator projecting and its use of the equator as the reference line. Its aim is to minimise the distortions of conventional representations of the earth and their embedded cultural biases.

In Lazaro’s icosahedron, Fuller’s original geo-political data is transcribed with the great maritime voyages of the 15th Century (Christopher Colombus, Ferdinan Megellan, James Cook and Vasco de Gama), explorers who following their Arab, African and Asian predecessors, instigated modern global trade and commerce.
