Artist Statement

Hashiya, is not only a two dimensional space, which divides a picture plane to create a window where the protagonist is occupying the central stage. Here extras are playing insignificant roles merely in the orbits around the protagonist. Hashiya is a binding force, not only filling the space for decorative purposes but it establishes a channel or bridge in between two divisions of a plane. The whispers from the outside world of Hashiya travel inwards and echo the main subject in a contextual voice.

For me the conception of reality and fiction of a mind appear hand in hand. Hashiya is used when the artist desires to share a new space with his audience. It is used as a point of initiation of his preference and desire for the viewer. It was a creative resolve by older generation of artists who articulated the pre-‐existing meaning of Hashiya as a tool for more relevant and meaningful story telling. Their methods introduced valuable space for text which also received the treatment of a visual element. Previously this was only a piece of writing.

For my latest inquiry I am keen to further experiment with the politics of text as a visual. I am not interested in the readability of the text, leading me to create more complex forms and textures out of Urdu and Persian letters which I manually carved out of books. It creates a confinement of entangled letters building a new space. This new space fashioned out of the pasted letters forms a channel or bridge between two planes much like the traditional Hashiya. The medium I work in creates a three dimensional effect, physically and visually, making the work seem as though popping out of a window or a Hashiya. It is not only the boundary lines of the entire piece that intensifies the work but each letter in itself has its own border. These borders are separate and connected. There is a communication that can only be achieved from a defined border or distance.
