artist statement

For me a work of art is the means & not the end. Thus, drawing one of the most frugal means of mark making since time immemorial, becomes the potential tool to draw connections within & with the. It helps me explore the spaces IN-BETWEEN the distinct aspects of my practices – studio practice, community engagement & participatory processes. Concerns of self & identity; space as psychological & physical; body as idea, form, texture all find a place in my vocabulary. My narrative functions like anecdotes cohabited by both the personal & the political.

For some time now, I have been drawing on graph papers. Spatially exploring the grid & its rules, works almost like negotiating with a limitation though self-imposed. It makes me more sensitive towards the freedom or the freeness not only in terms of a medium but also as ways of existing. Extremely personal & time consuming, drawing with & within the grids becomes a meditative act in an otherwise crowded world.

My long association of working with the children gives me opportunity to look at things in a different light which are otherwise considered to be childlike or playful. In these set of drawings, I began with diagrams of tools from the famous children’s set called Mechanix. Gradually, I started moving back and forth between looking at tools as mankind evolved to tools as surreal entities.
