artist bio

Prajeesh A.D. has completed his BFA (Sculpting) from RLV College of Fine Arts (Kerala) and MFA (Sculpting) from S.N. School of Fine Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad. Prajeesh has participated in the exhibition "HOW STRONG THE BREEZE HOW PRECIOUS THE FLIGHT" at Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad. His sculptures echo a fascinating self reflexive exercise on contemporary sculpting and our everyday object domain. He uses contradiction as an important trope to fuse together the dialectic of tension and opposites. They are imbued with philosophical configurations of different codes, ethics, and logic.

artist statement

A contradiction is a logical incompatibility between two or more propositions. A hammer is used to fix things, to put things into place. For the work titled "Contradiction", I made a metal hammer with two wooden handles. On the handles, I engraved the text "contradiction left and contradiction right" on both sides, thereby conveying in a minimalistic way the state of mental opposition in my mind as I searched for the right option and directions.

The work "Hammered" is also about giving visual form to mental states. This time, I fixed a metal hammer with a wooden handle on a pedestal. I attached iron nails to the hammer, to suggest that the hammer itself has been nailed. Marcel Duchamp's use of found objects, humor, dead-pan irony and textual punning were my inspirations while doing these works.
