artist statement

Indrajit Prasad tries to address compelling environmental issues surrounding our daily existence through his works. His works become a medium to communicate his inner battles and anxiety that jostle him. Living in the populous city of Mumbai, the duality of our contemporary existence becomes all the more vivid. On one hand we desire to preserve the environment but on the other the burgeoning human population and its perpetual needs encourage more and more encroachment of whatever natural habitation still sustains. This becomes the focal point of the artist's practice. Elements from Miniature paintings, Chinese landscape paintings as well as Japanese screen and woodcut printing find a place in Indrajit's visual discourse. The visual syntax found in the Renaissance paintings as well as the subversive language of surrealism also inspires the artist's composition.
