What's on the corner of your street? Is there a large cat with a ball of string peeping out; or is Gandhi ji's massive face staring down benignly at you? Maybe you found yourself walking under a tree with lava leaves; or standing in between two tanks firing at each other! Street Art is fast becoming an exciting avenue for artists to express themselves on a large scale and make works for the enjoyment of the public, in the process also making our city beautiful.
Moving away from museums, galleries and the like, Street art has gained much popularity in India and all over the world because of the freedom that it allows both the artist and the viewer - freedom to see a work whenever we feel like without making an event out of it; freedom for the artist to express whatever he/she wishes, whether they're political, cultural, social messages or just random images inspired by popular culture.
Delhi has been blossoming with local and international street artists leaving their murals and graffiti works on our streets. Walls of metro stations, residential colonies and public buildings have been transformed with spectacular art that has the city buzzing with excitement. More amazing to see is the initiative taken by organisations like St+Art India in bringing new artists from all over the world and giving them the opportunity to celebrate street art in Delhi.
With this segment, every week arthub will bring you interesting facts, figures, artist profiles and more about street art in Delhi, and general knowledge about this dynamic art form which has become a full-blown worldwide phenomenon.
