The Art Family Award Exhibition at Anant Art, New Delhi (Feb 5- March 25, 2023)

Literature

My practice is rooted in the spaces I inhabit. These spaces are of the mind as well as physical surroundings. I am interested in looking at various relationships we human beings develop with different geographical locations, seasons, and architecture around us.

My work engages with labour intensive processes of making art, one of them being the process of weaving. I believe it is a method of making that has the capacity to create artworks with both sensitive and robust physical tendencies. The materials I generally engage with are jute, cotton, silk, organza fabric, papier mâché

The 'SAD syndrome (2022)' is a soft sculpture woven with jute rope. S.A.D. or Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that changes with seasons. This work is a self-portrait as I dig deeper into the understanding of myself. Although I feel there's a lack of awareness amongst people about SAD and we fail to understand the reasons of experiencing certain involuntary changes in our thought process and body with the change in season.

This work branches from 'Waiting for the sun to rise (2020-2021)' which reflected on the longing for an untroubled time. The title was directed towards a particularly absurd kind of unrest. Waiting for winter to be over and the sun to be brighter. Although this time came with an added layer of anxiety with the upcoming second wave of covid. Impatience that emerged from the claustrophobia of repeated lockdowns and the greyness of the winter season in Delhi that year made it undeniably hard.

The pandemic was a disaster caused due to damaged boundaries of ecology and at the same time, it was proof of humanitarian spirit to survive. 'Standing Together (2021)' papier mâché figurines are reminders of this moment of realization and introspection of our acts that have led to such a huge manmade disaster. There is a sudden urge to reverse after causing massive damage to ecological systems of earth. We now feel driven to things that are unadulterated.

'Dream House (2020)' mocks these unrealistic longings through its imagery and material. It was a body of work rooted in the concept of a home that I and many of us aspire to live in.
