This painting critiques the common misunderstanding surrounding natural versus chemical substances, especially the belief that natural is always safe while chemical is inherently dangerous. This idea has become a popular trend and is often used as a catchphrase by alternative medicine practitioners to mislead people. We need to manipulate nature to survive. Healthcare is not possible without intervening in nature. The painting Chemostory is based on the objects on my father’s table after he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. It depicts items such as a blood sugar testing kit, a box of a blood pressure monitoring machine, an insulin pen, potassium syrup, and many other modern medicines that my father relies on to maintain his vitals in balance. The painting also includes a container of whey protein powder, which is a complete protein extracted from milk to enhance overall protein intake, and also an egg and a glass of milk. Hens and cattle have been genetically modified through human intervention of selective breeding to enhance desired traits. For example, selective breeding has dramatically increased egg production in hens and milk yield in cattle, making them more productive for human needs. Similarly, fruits are also selectively bred over generations for better taste, shelf life, and nutritional content. A small book is shown, containing details of blood sugar levels, water intake, and urine output measurements. Water intake level has become very crucial since my father started suffering from chronic kidney disease, highlighting that even water, a seemingly simple and natural substance, can be dangerous. The painting also includes a bottle of hand sanitizer, a face mask, and a mosquito repellent machine, all essential precautions to protect against various microbes and organisms that could cause various diseases. The painting also shows a mobile displaying information about the development of organ chips, which could potentially eliminate the need for animal testing in medicine, and also news about the successful resurrection of the long-extinct Dire wolf through genetic engineering. Thus, the work appreciates the progress of scientific advancements while also raising questions about the limits and potential dangers of their application.
